Last month saw the largest Brazilian Jiu Jitsu tournament in the world take place in Las Vegas, Nevada: the IBJJF World Masters. The event included over 7,700 competitors and 36 competition mats.

Held in the Las Vegas Convention Center over the course of 3 days, the massive event included thousands of matches, merchandise booths and seminars from legends of the sport.

The IBJJF World Masters is the premier jiu jitsu competition for competitors over 30 years old and athletes travel from all over the world to compete in it with the goal of becoming the #1 ranked athlete in the world in their division. This year Athlas Training Team Fort Lauderdale sent a strong group of 8 competitors to Las Vegas who train year-round with this goal in mind: becoming a world champion. Simply making the podium at World Masters is considered a great achievement and out of the 8 competitors ATT FTL sent to Vegas, 5 made the podium.

  • Larissa Trindade won Gold in the blue belt division, becoming a World Champion. In addition, she won the Pan American Championship in September, which is the 2nd most prestigious title in the sport. Coach Larissa is also a black belt in judo and one of the kids coaches at Athlas Training Team Fort Lauderdale.
  • Sean Burke won bronze in the black belt division after winning gold at last year’s World Masters.
  • Luke Stafford won bronze in the brown belt division after winning gold at last year’s event at purple belt. Coach Luke is also one of our instructors at Athlas Training Team FTL.
  • Kimberly McLean won bronze in the blue belt division after winning gold at the Pan American Championships this past September.
  • Anna Scrima won bronze in the purple belt division after winning gold in the event last year as a blue belt.
  • In addition, Charles McGuire won bronze in the Jiu Jitsu Con black belt no gi division, which was a separate tournament also held at the Las Vegas Convention Center. He competed in the adult division (18-29 years old) despite the fact he is in his 50’s.

Overall, it was a very successful trip for the ATT FTL competition team and a reflection of all the hard work and dedication they’ve displayed all year. Congratulations to all the athletes who competed and represented our team in Vegas. We’re all very proud!
