Should I train in the morning or in the evening? This is a question we get asked a lot and while any martial arts training we can get is great, here’s some reasons why training in the morning is particularly beneficial:
- Extra attention: Smaller class sizes in the morning compared to evening classes means extra attention from your instructor. This means they may have more time to answer your questions or give you detailed instruction tailored to your needs and correct technique issues you may be having.
- Get it out the way: Getting your training done in the morning before your day gets crazy and your work and home responsibilities derail your schedule is a great way to ensure you can get your daily workout in, even with a busy schedule.
- Start your day off right: Starting your day off with the knowledge that you made yourself stronger with physical exercise as well as improved your martial arts knowledge by learning new techniques allows you to start your day with a great sense of accomplishment. This starts you off on a positive note and sets the tone for the rest of your day.
- Clear your mind: Getting the excess energy out of your body in the morning is a great way to reduce tension and anxiety. Approaching your day with a clear head helps you make better decisions both at work and home.
- Improved sleep: Studies have shown that physical exercise in the morning can lead to better sleep, more time spent in REM sleep, as well as taking less time to fall asleep. This is especially important for those training martial arts because sleep is when your body recovers.
- Increased alertness: Training in the morning can be beneficial because morning is when your body’s cortisol levels are highest. Cortisol is a hormone that supports alertness. That’s why many people have an easier time retaining information in the morning and feel drowsy in the evening.
- Boost your metabolism: Training in the morning can boost your metabolism and ensure that you’re burning calories throughout the day. Studies have shown that exercising in the morning is the most effective way to burn fat.
So, regardless of what your personal reasons are for training martial arts–for fitness, for competition, for self defense–there’s many great reasons why training in the morning might be the most beneficial time for you to train.
