Roberto Jimenez and the Jiu-Jitsu Lifestyle

Roberto Jimenez few names in the world of Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) stir as much excitement as Roberto Jimenez. Known for his electrifying performances and fearless, submission-focused style, Roberto Jimenez has carved his place as one of the most thrilling athletes to watch in modern grappling. From his early beginnings on the mats as a child prodigy to silver medal performances at major international tournaments, Jimenez represents a new generation of competitors who bring flair, grit, and honor to the sport.

But beyond his accomplishments on the mats, what truly makes Roberto Jimenez special is the way he chooses to live his life — with intention, health, and authenticity. Here at Athlas Training Team, we’ve been lucky to witness not only his talent but also his character. Our founders, Professor Junior Fernandes and his wife Ana, immediately connected with Roberto’s energy, values, and healthy lifestyle. It’s rare to meet someone with such a pure heart and clear vision for their journey, and Roberto has inspired not just our students, but our family as well.

Roberto Jimenez: The Early Years

Roberto Jimenez was born on May 19, 2000, in Miami, Florida. With Ecuadorian roots and a father, Raul “Gacho” Jimenez, deeply involved in BJJ, Roberto was introduced to the martial art at the age of four. His family later moved to Texas, where he trained and evolved his game, overcoming language barriers and culture shock. His dedication and talent were evident from a young age, quickly earning him attention as a top prospect in the sport.

Dominating the Colored Belts

Roberto Jimenez dominated the colored belt divisions in his teenage years. As a blue belt, he won major juvenile tournaments, and at purple belt, he stunned the Jiu-Jitsu community by taking double gold at the IBJJF World Championships—winning every match by submission. He became known for wearing a rashguard with the words “Natural Rebel,” representing his stance against performance-enhancing drugs in the sport.

Black Belt Ascent

In early 2020, Roberto Jimenez was promoted to black belt. He wasted no time making a name for himself on the professional scene. His debut came at Who’s Number One, where he submitted Keenan Cornelius, a veteran and fan favorite. It was clear Roberto Jimenez was here to stay.

He continued to rack up victories against world-class opponents, including Tye and Kade Ruotolo, Hunter Colvin, and many more. His aggressive, fast-paced style and relentless pursuit of submissions earned him the nickname “The Natural.” Fans tuned in to his matches not just to see who would win, but to experience the energy and artistry he brought to the mats.

Recent Highlights and the 2025 Pan Championships

In 2023, Roberto Jimenez captured the IBJJF No-Gi World title in the absolute division, adding another major accolade to his growing legacy. He also won the ADCC South American Trials and claimed the Polaris Middleweight Grand Prix title.

At the 2025 IBJJF Pan Championships, Roberto Jimenez once again proved why he’s among the elite. He earned silver medals in both the heavyweight and absolute black belt divisions, displaying outstanding technique and determination. He faced top-level competitors like Gutemberg Pereira and Gustavo Batista, delivering high-level, technical, and fast-paced matches that had fans and commentators alike praising his performances.

A Mindset for Success

Beyond his physical talent, Roberto Jimenez is known for his mental game. He uses music and meditation to stay focused before matches, blocking out distractions and centering his energy. His training reflects his clean-living philosophy—no shortcuts, no excuses, only hard work and discipline.

His refusal to rely on banned substances and his vocal stance for clean sport have made him a role model for younger athletes. He embodies the values of discipline, resilience, and respect—core principles of Jiu-Jitsu.

It’s this mindset that resonated deeply with Professor Junior and Ana. As a family that lives and breathes Jiu-Jitsu, nutrition, and personal growth, we felt an instant connection with Roberto. We’ve shared meals, long conversations, and mutual dreams for what Jiu-Jitsu can become — not just a sport, but a way of life.
