“How long should we keep our kids out of jiu jitsu during the summer?”

Summer is upon us. How long should “summer break” be for your kids jiu jitsu practice?

During the summer, most families take a lot of trips. Our kids are out of school, their schedules change and, as a result, so do ours. If your child is enrolled in jiu jitsu classes (or some other sport), you may be considering taking time off to give him or her (or yourself) a break. This brings us to the main question of this article: What is the appropriate amount of time to keep your kids out of jiu jitsu during the summer?

It depends on the parents. Junior and I like to give our kids a short break and then put them right back into athletics. Here’s why:

Most parents wait until the school year starts again to put their kids back in jiu jitsu and other sports. But that usually doesn’t work out so well. When school starts again, our kids are tired from waking up and from adjusting to the new routine. When we have them start school AND sports again at the same time, it’s way too much. Our kids get overwhelmed, and they end up quitting.

Taking your children out of sports for a short period during the summer gives them a break without turning them into a couch potato. Kids jiu jitsu classes teach your children discipline, confidence, respect, good work ethic, the list goes on. Taking too long of a break can lead to a waning of these learned characteristics, in addition to creating that couch potato problem!

That’s why we suggest taking a short break but easing back into jiu jitsu at least one month before school starts. The best life lessons start when we’re young. And there’s no lesson better than teaching our kids the value of responsibility and consistency.
