Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu (BJJ) Classes Are Here!

Athlas Training Team Fort Lauderdale is proud to announce the addition of our new Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class to our Saturday schedule

Every Saturday from 11 am to 12 pm we will now be offering a new Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu class solely for women, taught by world-class female instructors. This is the perfect opportunity for any women who have thought about trying Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu to learn women’s self-defense, get in shape, build confidence or join a community but have felt intimidated to start. The class will be an even mix of experienced women who have been training Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu for years and brand new students who have never tried any martial arts class before. This allows the class to be catered to the different experience levels of our students and modified accordingly.

Why Women’s Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu?

For those unfamiliar with Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu or “BJJ”, it is widely regarded as one of the best forms of women’s self-defense because it stresses technique and leverage over size and strength. Known as “arte suave” in Brazil or “the gentle art”, Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu is a grappling-based martial art that emphasizes takedowns, pins, joint locks and chokes in place of strikes to subdue your opponent. A study conducted by the Los Angeles Police Department found that approximately 90% of street fights ended up on the ground at some point in the fight. This is where Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu shines! When charged up with adrenaline, the average person often instinctively clinches, grapples and tries to take their opponent to the ground in a fight. This is where most people are like a fish out of water, but the BJJ practitioner is truly in their element. As Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu legend Rickson Gracie once famously said:

After the clinch, it doesn’t matter what happens, one way or another, we’re going to hit the ground, and we’ll be in my world. The ground is my ocean, I’m a shark, and most people don’t even know how to swim.”

When you train BJJ consistently the techniques required to defend yourself in threatening situations become ingrained in your muscle memory. Your body takes over. This is possible because you’re able to train against a resisting opponent on a regular basis. This is possible because BJJ, unlike other women’s self-defense martial arts doesn’t involve striking, so you’re able to train it against a resisting opponent without the risk of injury that comes from striking-based martial arts. You’re not kicking the air, or punching a pad that doesn’t fight back; you’re problem-solving in real-time against a myriad of different reactions that your opponent might give you. This helps account for the unpredictability of an attacker. Most people also find this to be the most fun part of training BJJ.
