The recent Fort Lauderdale Open, hosted by the International Brazilian Jiu-Jitsu Federation (IBJJF) on October 19th and 20th, marked a significant moment for the local martial arts community. This event was the first of its kind in Fort Lauderdale, previously, major IBJJF events in Florida were traditionally held in larger cities such as Orlando or Miami.

Athlas Training Team: A Standout Presence in Fort Lauderdale

The Athlas Training Team, known for its quality and tradition, represented Fort Lauderdale with great competence. Established in the city since 2012, the academy competed alongside other renowned academies worldwide, such as Gracie Barra, Fight Sports, and Carlos Gracie. Although Athlas operates just one location, it displayed strength, skill, and discipline as it competed against large teams across Florida.

The result

With a team of 37 students competing in the gi divisions in the juvenile, adult, and master categories, Athlas secured an impressive total of 41 medals, including 14 gold, 13 silver, and 14 bronze.

In the No-Gi division, the team brought 12 athletes, who collectively earned 13 medals—8 gold, 2 silver, and 3 bronze. These results reflect not only the skill level of the athletes but also the dedication of Athlas’s coaches and technical team. Jiu Jitsu Fort Lauderdale

Among the standout athletes of the team are siblings Ana Luiza and Jorjão Fernandes, who together secured six gold medals and one silver.

Also competing in the blue belt category, Zack Schrader had an overwhelming campaign. Consequently, the American clinched four gold medals after dominating the ultra-heavyweight and open weight divisions, both with and without the gi, in the adult blue belt category.

Kaua Ribeiro(cebolinha): Victory at the Pan Kids No-Gi

CEBOLINHAOne of the highlights of the competition was Kaua Ribeiro, affectionately known as “Cebolinha.” An influential and talented athlete, Kaua won a coveted gold medal at the Pan Kids No-Gi, achieving two impressive finishes. Kaua is supported by “Jiu Jitsu for Good,” a social project sponsored by Athlas Training Team, which provides free English classes for young boys from Brazil, preparing them for potential careers in Jiu-Jitsu. This initiative aims not only to develop athletes but also to provide educational opportunities that enable them to compete and teach.
